The SAT exam in the UK: how the digital SAT works, 2026/27 dates and practice tests
What the American SAT is, how the digital test is built, what the Maths and Reading and Writing sections ask, the 2026/27 dates and fees, and a 12-week plan. Every fact is from College Board, AQA or a named university page, checked on 1 November 2026.
Key takeaways
- The SAT is College Board’s American admissions test, not the Year 6 SATs. It is taken in the Bluebook app: Reading and Writing (54 questions, 64 minutes) and Math (44 questions, 70 minutes), 2 hours 14 minutes in all.
- In each section, how you do in the first module decides whether the second is harder or easier. Each section is scored 200 to 800, and the total is 400 to 1600.
- As of 1 November 2026, the next dates you can book are 5 December 2026, then 6 March, 1 May and 5 June 2027. The fee is $68 plus a $43 international fee, in US dollars, before any extras.
- College Board offers free, full-length, adaptive practice tests in Bluebook. Take one at the start, one in the middle and one near the end of a 10 to 12-week plan.
1. SAT exam: what it is and who asks for it
This guide is about the SAT, the American admissions test run by College Board. It is not the Year 6 SATs, the key stage 2 tests in English primary schools. For those, read our guide Year 6 SATs.
US colleges use the SAT in admissions. Harvard College, for example, says it requires the SAT or ACT (another US admissions test). When those are not accessible, it says GCSE or A-Level results, actual or predicted, can meet the requirement in exceptional cases.[24]
College Board’s page for students applying to UK universities says most UK universities accept SAT and/or AP scores, and some require them.[23]
Each university sets its own entry rules, so check the course page for the one you want.
Policies also differ between US colleges, and sometimes between departments. College Board advises checking the score policy of every college on your list, usually on its admissions website.[19]
This guide is about the American SAT, not the Year 6 SATs.
2. How the digital SAT works: sections, modules and adaptive testing
The SAT has two sections, Reading and Writing, and Math. Each is split into two equal-length modules (blocks of questions), timed separately, with a 10-minute break between the sections. Most questions are multiple choice.[1]
You take it in the Bluebook app, on a Windows or Mac device, an iPad or a school-managed Chromebook. A phone or a personal Chromebook will not work.[16]
The test is adaptive, so it changes as you go. The first module of each section mixes easy, medium and hard questions. How you do decides your second module: one with harder questions on average, or one with easier questions on average. Both still contain easy, medium and hard questions, and roughly half of test takers get each.[14]
A few unscored trial questions are mixed in with the real ones. You cannot tell which they are.[14]
Within a module you can flag questions, jump around with a question menu, cross out options and use a line reader. You can hide the timer, and you get an alert at 5 minutes left.[18]
3. SAT Maths: what is tested, the calculator and the reference sheet
The Math section (Maths, in UK spelling) has 44 questions in two 35-minute modules. Most are multiple choice. In the rest you type your own answer.[1]
Each module has 20 scored questions and 2 unscored trial ones. College Board gives about 1 minute 35 seconds a question.[10]
Typed-answer questions are about a quarter of Math, according to College Board’s 2022 specification overview.[13]
Bluebook checks typed answers and rejects some errors, such as too many digits or letters. It shows a preview of your answer first.[14]
All four domains appear in each module, easiest to hardest. About 30% of questions are set in context.[9]
Bluebook has a built-in Desmos calculator for the whole Math section, which you can switch between scientific and graphing. A reference sheet of common formulas is also provided. The pages we read do not list the formulas, so open one in a practice test.[18]
The four domains are below. Shares and topics are from College Board’s Math specification, and counts from its Math overview.[10]
4. SAT Reading and Writing: what is tested
The section has 54 questions in two 32-minute modules. Each has 25 scored questions and 2 unscored trial ones. College Board gives about 1 minute 11 seconds a question.[12]
This is the English section, but it is not a literature exam. Passages are short, from 25 to 150 words, and each is followed by a single multiple-choice question. Nothing has to be written out at length.[11]
College Board lists the topics as literature, history and social studies, humanities and science. There are four domains, with shares and counts below.[13]
5. SAT scores, superscoring and how the SAT differs from GCSE and A-Level
Each section is scored from 200 to 800. The total is the sum of the two, from 400 to 1600.[17]
College Board says scores depend on several factors, including right or wrong answers, question difficulty and guessing probability. Its score guide advises answering every question, since for most students guessing is better than leaving a blank. The guide does not mention a penalty for wrong answers.[17]
Score reports also show percentiles (how you compare with other test takers), a score range showing how much your score might vary on another day, and how you did in each of eight content domains.[17]
Colleges that superscore use your best section scores, even from different tests. Not every college does. Score Choice lets you pick which test dates’ scores each college sees.[19]
The table compares the SAT with AQA, one UK exam board. GCSE Maths figures are from AQA’s page for GCSE Mathematics 8300.[25]
A-level Maths figures are from AQA’s page for A-level Mathematics 7357.[26]
GCSE English Language figures are from AQA’s page for GCSE English Language 8700. Papers differ by board and subject, so check yours.[27]
We found no official comparison of SAT topics with GCSE or A-Level content, so we do not claim one.
6. SAT dates 2026/27: which tests you can still book
College Board lists these SAT Weekend dates and says they apply to US and international students alike. As of 1 November 2026, 7 November has passed both its deadlines, so the next date you can book is 5 December.[2]
Score dates in the last column are from College Board’s 2026-27 calendar.[3]
Book the date, then work backwards: Deadlines end at 11:59 p.m. US Eastern Time, which is the early hours of the next morning in the UK. Register well before. To finish a 12-week plan for 6 March 2027, start by 12 December 2026.
7. Registering from the UK and what the SAT costs
The fee is $68 plus a $43 international fee, so $111 in all, for tests through June 2027.[4]
College Board’s guide for international educators says its dollar amounts are in US dollars.[8]
Outside the US, College Board says fee waivers may only go to eligible US citizens living outside the United States.[7]
Register online for international testing. College Board says it takes about 30 minutes and you can save your progress.[5]
Bring photo ID. Some countries have specific ID rules, so check College Board’s ID page.[6]
To borrow a device, register and request it at least 30 days before test day. Late registration is available worldwide, for an extra fee.[2]
On the day, bring your charged device with Bluebook set up, your admission ticket, photo ID, a charger and a pencil or pen. Arrive 15 minutes early. Bluebook has a calculator, or you can bring your own permitted one.[15]
Extra costs are in the table.[4]
8. Free official SAT practice tests and a 12-week plan
College Board says you can take its practice tests for free in Bluebook, and that they use the same adaptive format as the real test.[20]
They are timed like real tests. They are scored if you are signed in to a College Board student account, and you see your scores in My Practice afterwards.[21]
College Board recommends taking at least one practice test in a single sitting, as on test day. Afterwards, open Score Details to see every question and its explanation, note the questions you missed and look for patterns.[20]
College Board’s Official Digital SAT Prep on Khan Academy offers thousands of practice questions, videos, lessons and hints, plus study plans. A College Board post from October 2023 describes it as free.[22]
Here is a 12-week plan for Maths and for Reading and Writing. It follows the shares of the test, so Algebra and Advanced Math, about 35% each of Math, get the most time. With 10 weeks, give Algebra, Advanced Math, Conventions and Craft and Structure one week each.[10]
Turn every miss into a note: After each practice test, write one line per missed question: the skill, why you missed it and what you will do next time. Redo those questions a week later.
