A-Level results morning: what each UCAS status means
On results day 2026, 79% of 18-year-olds with offers got their first choice. Here is what the screen means for everyone, and what to do in the first hour.
Key takeaways
- On results day 2026, UCAS said 79% of UK 18-year-olds with offers were placed at their first choice and 13% at their insurance choice.
- Your UCAS status tells you where you stand: confirmed, placed at insurance, a changed course offer, or eligible for Clearing.
- A changed course offer must be answered in your application within five days, or you lose it.
- In Clearing, the student makes the calls, with their UCAS ID and Clearing ID to hand.
1. The day
A-Level results day 2027 is Thursday 12 August. Most students get results from their school or college from 08:00, and in 2026 UCAS updated at the same time.[1]
On results day 2026, UCAS said 79% of UK 18-year-olds from England, Wales and Northern Ireland who held an offer were placed at their first choice, and another 13% at their insurance choice. Over 26,000 courses were in Clearing that morning.[2]
2. What your status means
Your university decision shows in your UCAS application, not your grades. UCAS explains each status in plain words.[3]
3. If you narrowly missed
Ring the university before doing anything else. Ask whether they will still take you, or hold your place while a review of marking happens.[4]
A priority review is asked for by the school, usually at a cost, and marks can go down as well as up. UCAS says universities decide whether to hold places, at their discretion, until 7 September.[4]
Some universities offer a foundation year for students who miss year 1 entry requirements, and most will defer a place for a year if you met your conditions. Ask straight away.[4]
Read the screen twice: Before reacting, read the status and the whole results slip. Then decide on the first call.
4. Clearing calls
The student makes the calls. If they cannot, they must tell UCAS who has permission to speak for them.[4]
Have your UCAS ID, your Clearing ID and your grades ready, with a shortlist of universities and their Clearing phone numbers. A university may make an offer on the phone, which you can think about before deciding.[4]
In 2026, students could add a Clearing choice in their application from 13:00 on results day. Check UCAS for the 2027 time, and only add a choice once the university has said yes.[5]
Read the screen, take a breath, then make the first call.
