11+ registration: the dates to know for September 2028 entry
Registering for the 11+ and applying to your council are separate steps. The 2027 registration dates we could confirm, school by school.
Key takeaways
- Registering for an 11+ test and applying through your home council are two separate steps.
- The council application closes on 31 October in Year 6, but most test registrations close in Year 5, between June and the end of July.
- Every school or area sets its own dates, and they move from year to year, so check each school’s own page.
- From September 2027, Latymer’s 11+ will be run by Quest Assessments, with maths, English comprehension and English writing.
1. Why this week
If your child is in Year 5, the summer term is when most 11+ registrations close. Miss a registration date and your child may not be able to sit that school’s test, even though the council application stays open until 31 October.[1]
2. Two separate steps
First, register your child for each test with whoever runs it: the school, a group of schools or the council. Then, in Year 6, list your schools on your home council’s secondary application by 31 October, even for schools in another council area. Offers come on 1 March.[1]

3. Dates for September 2028 entry
These are the 2027 registration windows we found published in October 2026. Sutton’s dates are last year’s, as the 2027 ones were not yet out.[2]
4. Last year’s dates, as a guide
Some schools publish their dates later. Last year, Latymer’s registration ran from 17 March to 2 June 2026, with tests on 3 to 5 September. Redbridge registered from 1 May to 15 June 2026. Expect similar windows in 2027, but check.[6]
Latymer is also changing its test. From September 2027, Quest Assessments will run it, with three sections: maths, English comprehension and English writing.[7]
Check the date, then the test.
5. How you can help
Make a short list of the schools your child could realistically reach, and check each one’s area rule. Put every registration deadline in your calendar now, with a reminder a week before. Then find out which test each school uses, so practice matches the real thing. Our guide to grammar schools in London, borough by borough, covers the area rules.
Not sure where to start?: Our qualified teachers teach the 11+ one-to-one, online or in person. Every family starts with a free 45-minute assessment.
