The trial lesson
Two things to watch for in the first lesson
Qualifications get a tutor on our books. Fit is what makes lessons work. Online or in person, use the trial to check both.
Personality fit
- Does your child seem relaxed, even a little chatty?
- Do they ask questions when they’re stuck?
- Do they want to come back next week?
Why it matters: a student who feels comfortable asks questions, and questions are how they get unstuck and make progress. Asking great questions →
Teaching-style fit
- Do the explanations click, first or second time?
- Is the pace right: stretching, not rushing?
- Does the tutor check understanding, rather than just talk?
Why it matters: a lesson is only an hour, so learning has to be efficient. Every student has things that help them, like worked examples first or diagrams. Tutors aren’t mind-readers, so tell them. Tell your tutor how you learn best →
Not quite right? Tell us and we’ll match a different tutor. How to choose the right tutor
Getting set up
- A laptop or tablet. A tablet with a stylus is brilliant for maths and science.
- A steady internet connection and headphones.
- A quiet space with the camera on.
- The lesson links, which we send before the first lesson.
For younger children, we encourage a parent to stay nearby. Read our safeguarding policy.
Questions about online lessons
Is online tutoring as effective as face to face?
The Education Endowment Foundation’s review of one-to-one tuition finds that studies using digital technology show effects similar to other approaches. What matters most is a skilled teacher, a clear plan and regular sessions, and that’s what we provide online.
Which platform do you use?
Whichever suits your family or school: Zoom, Google Meet or Microsoft Teams. Every lesson also uses a shared Miro whiteboard.
Do we need to download anything?
Usually not. Zoom, Google Meet, Teams and Miro all open in a web browser, and we send the links before the first lesson.
Can my child switch between online and in person?
Yes. Many families mix online lessons in the week with sessions at one of our seven London hubs or at home.
How do bookings and reports work?
Through TutorCruncher, our tutoring platform. You can see upcoming lessons and lesson reports in one place.
