What's in the exams

The specifications split the content between the two papers rather than giving a percentage for each topic, so this shows what each paper covers. Each paper is half the grade.

  • Paper 1: topics 1 to 450%
  • Paper 2: topics 5 to 750%

Foundation or Higher?

Foundation

Grades 1 to 5. Questions are more straightforward, and a 5 is the top grade possible. It suits students aiming for a standard pass (4) or strong pass (5).

Higher

Grades 4 to 9, with a 3 allowed if a student just misses a 4. It is needed for grades 6 and above, and most sixth forms want it for A-Level. The risk: fall below the grade 3 mark and there is no grade at all.

The marks you really need for each grade

You do not need 90% for a top grade. Grade boundaries are set after the exams are marked, so a grade stays the same standard even when the papers are harder. These are the real AQA Higher boundaries from June 2026:

Your target score in practice papers

Sit a full set of past papers under timed conditions every few weeks. Work out the percentage for each set, ignore your single worst result (everyone has an off day) and average the rest. Aim for:

72%

to secure a grade 9

65%

to secure a grade 8

59%

to secure a grade 7

We add 5 percentage points to last year's boundary, because boundaries move a little each year and exam nerves cost marks.

What Biology is really about

Where the word comes from

"Biology" means "the study of life", from the Greek bios, "life", and -logia, "study". The word was coined around 1800.

Where it comes from

Robert Hooke first described "cells" in 1665, after looking at cork through a microscope in London. Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace presented the theory of evolution by natural selection at the Linnean Society in London in 1858, and in 1928 Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin at St Mary's Hospital in Paddington.

Why it's still taught

GCSE Biology explains how bodies, diseases and ecosystems work, from vaccines to climate change. A strong grade opens the way to A-Level Biology and on to medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary science, psychology and sports science.

How to do well in GCSE Biology

Learn the required practicals

Questions ask about the method, variables and results of each required practical. Make a one-page summary of each.

Use precise biological words

Marks depend on exact terms such as "diffusion" and "active transport". Use mark schemes to learn the wording examiners want.

Draw and label from memory

Cells, the heart, the eye and the nephron come up often. Sketching them from memory beats rereading notes.

Practise the maths

Biology papers include percentages, magnification, rates and graphs. Do a few calculation questions each week.

Turn notes into questions

Flashcards with a question on the front and the answer on the back make self-testing quick and effective.

Answer six-mark questions in a logical order

Extended answers are marked on how clearly linked the points are. Plan two or three bullet points before writing.
