What's in the exams

The specifications split the content between the two papers rather than giving a percentage for each topic, so this shows what each paper covers. Each paper is half the grade.

  • Paper 1: topics 1 to 550%
  • Paper 2: topics 6 to 1050%

Foundation or Higher?

Foundation

Grades 1 to 5. Questions are more straightforward, and a 5 is the top grade possible. It suits students aiming for a standard pass (4) or strong pass (5).

Higher

Grades 4 to 9, with a 3 allowed if a student just misses a 4. It is needed for grades 6 and above, and most sixth forms want it for A-Level. The risk: fall below the grade 3 mark and there is no grade at all.

The marks you really need for each grade

You do not need 90% for a top grade. Grade boundaries are set after the exams are marked, so a grade stays the same standard even when the papers are harder. These are the real AQA Higher boundaries from June 2026:

Your target score in practice papers

Sit a full set of past papers under timed conditions every few weeks. Work out the percentage for each set, ignore your single worst result (everyone has an off day) and average the rest. Aim for:

83%

to secure a grade 9

74%

to secure a grade 8

65%

to secure a grade 7

We add 5 percentage points to last year's boundary, because boundaries move a little each year and exam nerves cost marks.

What Chemistry is really about

Where the word comes from

"Chemistry" comes from "alchemy", through medieval Latin alchimia and the Arabic al-kīmiyā, probably from the Greek khēmeia, the art of transforming metals.

Where it comes from

In 1803 John Dalton, a Manchester teacher, proposed that everything is made of tiny atoms. In 1807 Humphry Davy at the Royal Institution in London used electricity to discover sodium and potassium, and in 1869 Dmitri Mendeleev in Russia published the first periodic table.

Why it's still taught

GCSE Chemistry explains what things are made of and how they change, from cooking to batteries to medicines. A strong grade leads to A-Level Chemistry, which is required for medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and veterinary science, and is valued for engineering and many science degrees.

How to do well in GCSE Chemistry

Master the calculations

Relative formula mass, moles and concentration questions are worth many marks on Higher papers. Practise a few every week.

Learn the required practicals

Questions ask about methods, variables and results. Make a one-page summary of each practical.

Balance equations confidently

Writing and balancing symbol equations comes up across many topics. Daily practice makes it automatic.

Use the periodic table on the paper

A periodic table is provided. Know how to read atomic number, mass and group from it quickly.

Learn the tests and colours

Tests for gases and ions, and flame test colours, are pure recall and easy marks with flashcards.

Explain using particles

Many questions want explanations in terms of particles, bonds and energy. Practise writing these in clear steps.
