How the grading works
How the grading works
Everyone sits the same papers. The marks are added up and the total decides the grade, from A* down to E. Edexcel weights its papers 35%, 35% and 30%, so its total is 270. Research methods and statistics are tested on every board, and calculators are allowed.
The marks you really need for each grade
You do not need 90% for a top grade. Grade boundaries are set after the exams are marked, so a grade stays the same standard even when the papers are harder. These are the real AQA boundaries from June 2026:
Source: AQA, A-level grade boundaries June 2026. Boundaries change slightly every year.
Your target score in practice papers
Sit a full set of past papers under timed conditions every few weeks. Work out the percentage for each set, ignore your single worst result (everyone has an off day) and average the rest. Aim for:
85%
to secure a grade A*
77%
to secure a grade A
64%
to secure a grade B
We add 5 percentage points to last year's boundary, because boundaries move a little each year and exam nerves cost marks.

What Psychology is really about
Where the word comes from
"Psychology" means "the study of the soul or mind", from the Greek psychē, "breath, soul, mind", and -logia, "study".
Where it comes from
Wilhelm Wundt opened the first psychology laboratory in Leipzig in 1879. In London, Francis Galton pioneered the measurement of individual differences, and John Bowlby's work on attachment at the Tavistock Clinic in the 1950s, now a core A-Level topic, changed how hospitals and nurseries care for children.
Why it's still taught
Psychology teaches students to think scientifically about people, evaluate research and understand mental health. It leads to degrees in psychology, neuroscience and social sciences, and careers in clinical and educational psychology, teaching, HR, marketing and criminology.
How to do well in A-Level Psychology
Master research methods
Research methods and statistics are worth a large share of the marks on every board. Practise them weekly.
Learn studies in detail
Know the aim, method, results and conclusion of each key study, and its strengths and weaknesses.
Evaluate everything
Top answers weigh up evidence, methods and ethics, not just describe them.
Practise maths skills
At least 10% of marks involve maths, such as percentages, graphs and statistical tests.
Use the issues and debates
Nature and nurture, free will and determinism: linking topics to these debates lifts essays.
Practise extended answers
Long questions reward clear structure and balanced evaluation. Practise them to time.
