GCSE maths and English: the last push before half-term
The AQA maths and English Language papers still to come, how many marks a grade 4 took last year, and four habits that pick up marks.
Key takeaways
- In June 2026, AQA Higher maths students needed 63 marks out of 240 (26%) for a grade 4. Foundation students needed 154 (64%).
- AQA English Language needed 75 out of 160 (47%) for a grade 4 and 103 (64%) for a grade 7. Boundaries change every year.
- AQA’s provisional 2027 timetable has English Language Paper 1 on 24 May, maths Paper 2 on 27 May, English Language Paper 2 on 8 June and maths Paper 3 on 14 June.
- Try every question, show working, pace each paper and read each question carefully.
1. Why this week
Maths and English matter for almost every next step after GCSEs, and both are spread across the whole exam season. This week brings English Language Paper 1 and maths Paper 2, with two more papers after half-term.
2. The papers still to come
These are the AQA dates from its provisional 2027 timetable. All four are morning papers. Other boards use different dates, so check your child’s own timetable from school.[2]
3. Every mark counts
Grade boundaries show how many marks were needed for each grade. They are set after marking and change every year, but last year’s give a sense of scale.[1]
A few marks can change a grade: Grades are decided on the total across all papers, so a handful of extra marks on one paper can lift the final grade. Our GCSE Maths and GCSE English Language guides show every board’s boundaries.
4. Four habits that pick up marks
Each AQA maths paper has 80 marks in 90 minutes, so a mark is worth a little over a minute. These habits help on every paper.[3]
Every mark counts.
Try every question
A blank answer can’t earn a mark. A sensible first step often can.
Show working
In maths, a correct method can earn marks even when the final answer is wrong.
Pace it
Move on from a question that is taking too long, and come back to it at the end.
Read the question
Underline what it asks you to do, then check the answer does exactly that.
5. How you can help
Keep this week’s routine steady: a past paper or two in the real time limit, early nights before each exam and a proper break at half-term.
