End well: review, renew and refer

How a block ends shapes what the family remembers. Close it on purpose, with evidence and a clear next step.

The course unlocks one lesson at a time. You can read this now, but it only counts once you’ve finished Tutor, not teacher.

Key takeaways

1. The end-of-block review

Block describes the last phase of consulting as deciding together whether to extend, change or end the work. Doing it deliberately, instead of letting lessons fizzle out, is part of a professional service.[1]

Book a short review in the last lesson or on a call. Bring the baseline, the target, the latest score and your score chart.

Question
Example answer
Where did we start?
41% on Paper 2, losing marks on long questions
Where are we now?
63%, finishing papers on time
Did we hit the target?
Yes: secure grade 5 on the last two papers
What’s next?
New target: grade 6 by the May exams, fortnightly lessons

2. Three honest options

Renew

A new target and plan, because there’s a clear next goal worth the time.

Step down

Fewer lessons, because the student can now do more alone.

Stop

The job is done. Say so. It builds more trust than stretching it out.

3. Ask for feedback

Ask the student and the parent: what helped most, and what would you change? Listen without defending. The trusted-advisor habit is to treat feedback as information about the client’s experience, not a verdict on you.[2]

If the family is happy, it is fine to ask whether they’d be willing to share their experience in a review. Ask everyone, not just the families you expect to be happy, and never offer anything in return.

Ending a block well is how the next one starts.

4. You’ve finished the course

You now have the consultant’s toolkit for tutoring: agree the outcome, earn trust, diagnose first, keep students thinking online, partner with parents, show the progress and leave them stronger. Use one habit at a time until it sticks.

If you’d like to tutor with Brainhub, we’d love to hear from you.

Try this: Pick the one habit from this course you most want to build, and write it at the top of your next lesson plan.
